Florida Bill Helps Foster Kids Find Driver’s Freedom

Florida’s child advocates and attorneys who fight for the rights of youth abused and neglected in the Florida child welfare system were pleased when an important bill found its way through the Florida Legislature.

The “Keys to Independence Bill” was on the way to Governor Rick Scott for signature by May 3. Fostered by Florida Youth SHINE, the bill helps kids in foster care or under relative and non-relative attend driver’s education, and earn their driver learner’s permit and driver’s license and get help with the cost of car insurance. Many of us cannot comprehend life without the freedom a simple driver’s license brings.

Now, these kids won’t have to, either.

With the help of Florida Youth SHINE kids, and Alan Abramowitz, Executive Director of the Florida Guardian Ad Litem Program, this bill found success.
