Child Tells of Abuse, Rats in Home of Mother Whose Child Vanished


In a case where it appears state child protective officials had a chance – and failed – to save the life of an at-risk child under their watch, attorneys who fight for the rights of at-risk children are watching as the matter unfolds in state court. According to news reports, Broward child welfare officials had a chance during a June 2015 hearing to intervene in the life of 1-year-old Angela Dufrene.

The child soon vanished.  Some believe the state also had a chance at that time to realize the child was missing. It would be a year before child welfare officials would realize the child was gone.

A the hearing, Broward Circuit Judge Stacey Schulman was reviewing the matter of the state’s response to reports to the child abuse hotline that Angela’s mother, Marjorie Dufrene, was reported to have “excessively” one of her other children.

Now, state officials and child advocates are left to wonder where Angela may be – and what lessons can be learned from her young life.
