Tampa Community to Celebrate Foster Child Advocates on June 7

Join some of Tampa’s leading child advocates, child abuse attorneys, and those who fight for the rights of Florida’s foster children and other neglected kids when Florida’s Children First hosts its Tampa Bay Area Child Advocacy Awards & Reception. The event will be held on Tuesday, June 7, 2016, from 5:15pm to 7:30pmat The Law Offices of Shook Hardy & Bacon (100 N. Tampa Street, Suite 2900, Tampa 33602). Register Now.

The event will honor some of the Tampa area’s most prominent and tireless child advocates. They include:

  • Commissioner Sandy Murman. Commissioner Murman has spent countless hours volunteering as a community advocate and a public policy leader.  She has been directly involved in more than 20 organizations that support our community and enhance the lives of children and families. Prior to joining the County Commission, Murman completed eight years as a member of the Florida House of Representatives from 1996-2004. One of Commissioner Murman’s current focus areas is providing high-quality critical Children’s Services in Hillsborough County through her creation of a Blue Ribbon Committee for Child Safety.
  • Stephen Todd. Mr. Todd is a volunteer who stands out. He volunteers for the Guardian Ad Litem program, the HCBA Mentor Program and Crossroad for Florida Kids and has contributed well over 1500 pro bono hours in his 25 year career with over 225 in 2015 alone. Stephen “Steve” Todd is a Senior Assistant County Attorney in the Hillsborough County Attorney’s Office Litigation Division. He recruits, mentors and believes that it is the obligation of every attorney to serve those who cannot hire an attorney.
  • Elyse Silver. Ms. Silver was working as a P.E. teacher at Davis Elementary School, which serves all the children from The Children’s Home, a residential treatment program for traumatized foster children. She met Thomas when he was chosen to be her “helper.” Ms. Silver fell in love with Thomas and adopted him. Later, she adopted John and David, who both also attended Davis Elementary. Thomas is currently attending Jacksonville University on a football scholarship.
